Belsize Eco Week
Was a fantastic success this year. From a foodie point of view, there were two highlights. The showing on the End of Line film, which coincided with the launch of our Sustainable Fishing policy (see below).
The second was the building of the cob oven, by Terry Hackwith. Those of you who saw it will agree it was amazing, for those who didn’t, see the photo to the left with Marco loading up the first pizza of the day. If you’d like to find out more, please do e-mail Terry direct.
Many of our local suppliers sampled their food and the kids had a great time making their own mini cob oven.
Elsewhere there was a fun run, various ‘green’ stalls, foraging on the Heath and an ‘odd shaped’ vegetable competition!
Earlier in the week, a number of other films were shown and debates had.
The week ended with a very well attended Belsize Transition Town meeting. Am sure that after a second great year, Eco Week will become an annual event in the Belsize Calender!

Sustainable Fishing Policy
We have launched our Sustainable Fishing policy. It is our aim initially to eliminate all products that are rated 5 by the Marine Conservation society (ie those species in the most danger). We will also be communicating the ratings of all our fish to customers, so that everyone can clearly understand the implications of what they are buying. While we don’t believe in preaching to customers, we do hope through this process that we can encourage people to move towards buying more sustainable fish.
Carrier Bag Charge
Also during Eco Week, as part of our drive to reduce the number of carrier bags we use, we introduced a charge of 2p for single use carrier bags. All funds raised will be allocated to the Pennies for Plastic Trust For more details, please click here.
