Food from the Sky

Food from the Sky is the worlds first supermarket roof garden, growing organic fruit and vegetables for sale in Thornton’s Budgens in Crouch End.
Its a collaboration between Thornton’s Budgens, The Positive Earth Project (a local social enterprise) and the local community. The project is a non for profit venture with all proceeds from sale of products being sunk back into the project.
This is designed to inspire our community and a wider audience on the possibilities for urban food growing at a time when London needs to grow considerably more food and therefore lower our carbon footprint.
The growing and harvesting will be undertaken by a team of volunteers managed by The Positive Earth Project. The space will be used to encourage local residents and local schools to undertake their own growing projects. For example, we plan to run food growing workshops on the roof and provide seeds from the harvest free of charge to residents and schools.
We are collaborating with the heritage seed library by growing a number of endangered species of food.
The project has already inspired the local community and organisations such as The Soil Association and the London School of Economics (who are also now looking to build one).
In the last six weeks alone, urban biodiversity is already returning to the roof garden, and we have pollinating bees, ladybirds, butterflies and small birds. It’s such an exciting and inspiring project, and we have had a huge amount of interest and support from volunteers, businesses and from Haringey council.
